Biofuture Summit II conference postponed to 2021, associated webinar series to start this August

Three events in one and starting now

August 7, 2020,

Dear participant of the BBEST2020 and Biofuture Summit II joint conference

We are delivering more than originally planned: instead of a physical conference from 30 Nov to 2 Dec 2020, BBEST/BIOFUTURE SUMMIT II has expanded to include online webinars and conferences in 2020 and a presential conference, at the same venue, tentatively scheduled from 24 to 26 May 2021. Therefore, BBEST/BIOFUTURE SUMMIT II will be starting now and will go on until May 2021.

We concluded that it is unlikely that we could physically meet in a hotel in São Paulo in November 2020 because of the way the COVID-19 pandemic is progressing. Then we adjusted to having our conference rolling in 2020 – because there are many important things to discuss – and convene in May for plenary and parallel sessions. The new plans are:

  • August through October 2020: BBEST/BIOFUTURE Kick off with two webinars to get started with high impact themes related to bioenergy and bioeconomy. All registered BBEST/BIOFUTURE participants are already registered to the webinars.  THE FIRST WEBINAR will be specific to the Brazilian reality and context, to be held August 13th, 2020, 14:00 h (São Paulo Time). A specific invitation with the link will follow soon to those who have registered to the conference.

  • The second webinar, to be held on September or October (date tbc)  will be global in context, and address the upcoming Biofuture Platform Principles for post-COVID recovery with bioeconomy.

  • 30 Nov to 2 Dec 2020: instead of the on-site conference, a series of online events including a brief policy day forum and reformulated Poster Sessions with more exposure and more opportunities of interaction among the participants and sponsors. Best Poster Prizes will be delivered as well as Conference Certificates.

  • 24 to 26 May 2021 (tbc): a physical conference to close BBEST/BIOFUTURE SUMMIT 2020-2021 at the Renaissance Conference Center in São Paulo. The original program is being updated but, as planned, we will have a Policy Day, Parallel Sections, Round Tables, Exhibits, Technical Tours and all the interesting activities we already had.

All BBEST/BIOFUTURE SUMMIT II registered participants are already registered for the 2020-2021 events. Those who submitted oral or poster contributions will have the opportunity to update or even change their papers. Registered participants who cannot attend on the new dates can also transfer their paid registration to colleagues to present their papers.

We will keep you posted on all the forthcoming activities. See you at the BBEST/BIOFUTURE SUMMIT!

Biofuture Platform

The Biofuture Platform is an action-oriented, country-led, multi-stakeholder coalition on low carbon transport and the bioeconomy launched in November 2016 at UNFCCC COP22 by Argentina, Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark, Egypt, Finland, France, India, Indonesia, Italy, Morocco, Mozambique, Netherlands, Paraguay, Philippines, Sweden, United Kingdom, United States of America and Uruguay. The Platform aims to facilitate policy dialogue and collaboration among leading countries, organizations, academia and the private sector conscious of the need to accelerate development and scale up deployment of modern sustainable low carbon alternatives to fossil-based solutions in transport, chemicals, plastics and other sectors. Major Biofuture Platform outcomes and deliverables so far are the Biofuture Vision Declaration endorsed by 19 countries; the I Biofuture Summit; and the “Creating the Biofuture” Report. After two years during which Brazil served as the interim Facilitator (“secretariat”) for the initiative, the International Energy Agency (IEA) assumed those functions in February 2019, with the agreement of the 20 member countries.

The Brazilian Bioenergy Science And Technology Conference (BBEST) is a triannual international conference on bioenergy that is in its fourth edition, after the very positive outcome from the previous versions in 2011, 2014 and 2017, attended by hundreds of researchers, entrepreneurs and government officials from Brazil and abroad, to discuss bioenergy and sustainability. Organized by the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP), BBEST 2020 will bring key topics such as responsible land use, crop productivity and resilient multifunctional landscapes, harvesting technology, impact of logistics and scale, integral biorefinery development, and emerging advanced materials and energy carriers for aviation, marine and road transport.
